I have worked with several ATSs over the years, and seen many, many résumés in that time. Unfortunately, many résumés are ATS-unfriendly because the content is jammed into MS Word templates that make use of heavy formatting. Formatting that some ATSs, including some fairly popular ones, will choke on. Formatting elements that should be avoided by the educated job seeker include. Headers/footers. Critical information stored in this part of a MS Word document is missed or hidden by certain ATSs. Data fields. Folks, data fields in a MS Word document are there for mail merges. Your résumé is not a form letter. don’t do this. Tables. Without fail, when I see a résumé represented in an ATS and there’s a table, it comes out wrong. Don’t use tables and charts—please.
